Elected Consultation is a policy that allows a representative organization for non-administrative employees to sit across the table from the administration on a regular basis to discuss all matters regarding the employer/employee relationship. Any agreements reached in these discussions are then forwarded to the school board for ratification. Once ratified by the board, the agreements become policy.

La Joya AFT was founded in Agust of 1984 under the name of the La Joya Federation  of United School Employees. La Joya FUSE. JJ Luna was it's first president. During his tenure the name was changed to Hidalgo Federation of Teachers to included all school employees within the county. In 1989, we chartered under the name of La Joya Federation of Teachers. Greg Barrera has been it's president since than.

We represent all school employees except administrators who hire and fire. Teachers, counselors, nurses and school employees are welcome to join a "Union of Professionals".

We also represent all Classified and auxillary employees within the school district.

The Paraprofessional and School-Related Personnel (PSRP) division of the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO, represents more than 350,000 school support staff in K-12 districts, colleges and universities. Our jobs include office employees, custodians, maintenance workers, bus drivers, instructional paraprofessionals, food service workers, school nurses and health aides, technicians, groundskeepers, secretaries, bookkeepers, mechanics, special education assistants and hundreds of other job titles.

Throughout this century, the AFT has been a major force for preserving and strengthening America's democratic commitment to public education and public service.
